How The Calculation Works

Formulas, material coverage assumptions, waste buffers, and rounding standards.

Grout volume depends on tile dimensions: smaller tiles (e.g. 4"x4") require significantly more grout than large-format tiles (12"x24") due to increased joint linear footage.

We compute total joint volume in cubic inches and multiply by dry grout density (~0.060 lbs/cu in) with a 10% cleanup buffer.

Standard Formula: Grout Volume = (Tile Area / Tile Size) × Joint Perimeter × Width × Depth × Density

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical installation guidance and purchasing tips for grout calculator.

Use unsanded grout for joints narrower than 1/8" (3mm) or on polished marble/glass that scratches easily. Use sanded grout for joints 1/8" and wider to prevent shrinkage cracking.
