How The Calculation Works

Formulas, material coverage assumptions, waste buffers, and rounding standards.

Roof area is the footprint including overhangs multiplied by a pitch factor โ€” a 6:12 roof has about 12% more surface than its footprint, and a 12:12 roof about 41% more. Estimating from the footprint alone is the classic way to come up short.

Material is counted in squares: one square is 100 sq ft, and three bundles of standard architectural shingle cover one square.

Underlayment is estimated at 400 sq ft per roll, and ridge cap at roughly one bundle per 25-30 linear feet of ridge and hip.

Standard Formula: Squares = (Footprint Area ร— Pitch Multiplier) รท 100, then ร— (1 + Waste%)

Re-roofing is the cheapest time to add solar, since the panels mount to a new deck and you only pay for roof access once. Use our Solar Payback Calculator to check whether panels pay for themselves on your roof.
