How The Calculation Works

Formulas, material coverage assumptions, waste buffers, and rounding standards.

Wallpaper is estimated in vertical strips, not by area. Each strip must be cut to the full wall height plus one pattern repeat so the design lines up with its neighbour, and the offcut is usually unusable.

A large repeat is expensive: a 21" repeat on an 8 ft wall can waste nearly a fifth of every roll, which is why two papers covering the same wall can differ by several rolls.

Doors and windows are deducted at standard sizes, but only where a full strip is displaced — a window in the middle of a wall still needs paper above and below it.

Standard Formula: Rolls = ⌈Strips Needed ÷ Strips per Roll⌉, where strip length = wall height + pattern repeat

Every strip has to be cut so its pattern aligns with the strip beside it, so the usable length of a roll drops by up to one repeat per strip. A paper with a 24" repeat can need 25-30% more rolls than a plain paper covering the same wall.
