How The Calculation Works

Formulas, material coverage assumptions, waste buffers, and rounding standards.

Brick count per square foot is fixed by the brick size including a standard 3/8" mortar joint — the joint is part of the module, which is why a nominal 8" brick does not measure 8".

A double-wythe wall doubles the brick count and adds header courses or wall ties, so structural walls cost far more per square foot of face than a veneer.

Mortar is estimated at roughly 7 bags of Type N or S per 1,000 bricks, plus masonry sand at about 1 cubic yard per 8 bags.

Standard Formula: Bricks = Net Wall Area × Bricks per Sq Ft × Wythe Count × (1 + Waste%)
