How The Calculation Works

Board count comes from the deck width divided by the actual face width plus the gap — a nominal 2x6 is 5.5" wide, so a 14 ft deck takes 29 boards at a 1/4" gap, not 28.
Choosing a stock length that divides evenly into your deck run matters more than price per board: a 20 ft deck built from 16 ft stock wastes a quarter of every board unless you stagger the butt joints over joists.
Joist count assumes 16" on-centre spacing, which suits most decking. Composite boards often require 12" on centre — check the manufacturer span table, because composite sags where wood would not.
