Code Check

IRC Section R312: Guardrails must be at least 36" high for residential decks (>30" above grade) and balusters spaced so a 4" sphere cannot pass through.

Material estimates include recommended trade waste buffer. Always confirm dimensions on site prior to ordering.

How The Calculation Works

Formulas, material coverage assumptions, waste buffers, and rounding standards.

Baluster spacing is solved backwards from the building code rather than divided evenly: IRC R312 requires that a 4" sphere cannot pass through any opening, so the calculator finds the smallest count whose resulting gap stays under that limit.

Spacing is computed per section between posts, not across the whole run, because sections are rarely identical and an average would put some gaps over code.

Post count includes one at each end of every section plus gate and corner posts โ€” the fencepost rule again, which is why a 44 ft rail needs more posts than 44 divided by 6.

Standard Formula: Balusters = โŒˆRail Length รท (Baluster Width + Max Gap)โŒ‰ per section, spacing adjusted to stay under code

Frequently Asked Questions

Practical installation guidance and purchasing tips for deck railing & baluster calculator.

A 4" sphere must not pass through any opening in the guard, per IRC R312. The practical build target is 3.5"-3.9" to leave tolerance for lumber that is not perfectly straight. This is the single most commonly failed deck inspection item.
