How The Calculation Works

Formulas, material coverage assumptions, waste buffers, and rounding standards.

Total area is divided by the area of one sheet and rounded up. The raw figure before rounding is shown separately so you can see how much of the last sheet is actually used.

A 10% waste allowance covers saw kerf, edge trimming and the offcuts created by staggering joints โ€” sheathing seams should never line up across adjacent rows.

Area-based estimating is a starting point, not a cutting list. A room whose dimensions are not close multiples of 4 ft will generate more offcut than the percentage suggests.

Standard Formula: Sheets = โŒˆ(Area ร— (1 + Waste%)) รท Sheet AreaโŒ‰

3/4" for subfloors over joists at 16" on centre, 1/2" for wall sheathing, 5/8" for roof sheathing at 24" rafter spacing, and 1/4" for cabinet backs or underlayment. Going thinner on a subfloor is the usual cause of a floor that flexes and squeaks.
