How The Calculation Works

Formulas, material coverage assumptions, waste buffers, and rounding standards.

Gate openings are subtracted from the run before sections are counted, then gate posts are added back โ€” gates need a post on each side, and those posts carry swinging load so they are usually set deeper.

Post count follows the fencepost rule: a 150 ft run at 8 ft spacing needs 20 posts, not 19, because the final section still needs a post at its end.

Concrete is estimated at roughly one to two 50 lb bags per post depending on hole size, assuming a hole three times the post width and one third of the post height deep.

Standard Formula: Posts = โŒˆNet Length รท Post SpacingโŒ‰ + 1, plus two posts per gate

One third of the above-ground height, or below the frost line, whichever is deeper. A 6 ft fence needs posts about 2 ft deep in frost-free ground, and deeper where the ground freezes. Corner and gate posts should go deeper still.
