How The Calculation Works
Formulas, material coverage assumptions, waste buffers, and rounding standards.
Volume is area times depth, converted to cubic yards — the unit bulk material is actually sold in. One cubic yard covers 108 sq ft at 3" deep, which is the number worth remembering.
Bag counts use the typical bag size for each material: mulch is usually sold in 2 cu ft bags, topsoil and compost in 1 to 1.5 cu ft bags, so the same volume needs very different bag counts.
Approximate delivered weight is included because bulk material is often sold and hauled by the ton, and a half-yard of wet topsoil will overload a light trailer.
